Organizing Solutions to

Make your Life Easier!

Our job as professional organizers is to give you tips to make your life easier and to create solutions to maximize your space. Today I want to share suggestions on how to store your Christmas decorations.

How to Store Your Artificial Christmas Tree. . .

Have you ever tried to fit your artificial Christmas tree back into its original box? If so, I’m guessing that did not go so well for you :)

Consider using a tree storage bag or a couple of large plastic totes.

A tree storage bag is a good way to keep all of the parts of the tree together and makes it pretty easy for two people to carry the tree. Make sure to get a bag that matches the height of your artificial tree.

Another option is to use a couple of storage bins. The bonus of using bins is that they stack well. I have my tree parts stored in two bins and use a third of the same size to store other large Christmas decorations and garland.

When choosing plastic bins, make sure to measure the longest parts of your tree and pick bins that are long enough to fit these. You will need 2-3 bins to store most artificial trees. This is one of my favorite bins because of its length. Here is another large bin I have used.

How to Store Christmas Ornaments. . .

This is one of my favorite ornament storage systems!

When storing Chrtistmas ornaments I think plastic, stackable bins are sturdier than fabric bins. I also like ornament trays that have adjustable dividers and handles.

Pictured here is the 74 qt. Weathertight Tote from The Container Store. The ornament storage trays come in two different sizes: The 3” Ornament Tray and the 4” ornament tray. This storage bin holds 3-4 trays, depending on which size you decide to use. Each of these trays is constructed to be sturdy yet lightweight and stackable.

When packing ornaments, I do not use each ornament’s original box because I feel like it is a waste of time when there are systems like this to protect your ornaments. For larger ornaments, you can remove one of the pieces of the interior dividers to make a row of larger cubbies. Wrap the extremely fragile ones in bubble wrap or tissue paper, but really, the ornaments are protected pretty well in these trays. They are not packed well enough for a cross country move, but they are packed well enough to move the bins from your living room to the storage room :)

For all of your other holiday decor, I think it is helpful to pack one room or space at a time and label each bin accordingly. The bonus for packing your decorations this way is that it gives you the option of decorating just one space at a time. You can grab the bin for the dining room, decorate that space, and then be done until you want to tackle another room. You do not have to get every bin out at the same time.

So this year when you are unpacking your holiday decorations, think about if the way you are storing them is working for you. My goal really is to give you tips to make your life easier, I hope this helps :)
